Gingerbread Cookies

Grandma Damer’s recipe – great for roll out cookies or making Gingerbread houses

  • 5 – 5 1/2 cups White Flour
  • 1tsp.    Baking soda
  • 1 tsp.   Salt
  • 2 tsp.   Ginger
  • 2 tsp.   Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp.   Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp.   Cloves
  • 1 cup.  Shortening
  • 1 1/4 cup. Molasses
  • 2.   Eggs, beaten
  1. Preheat Oven to 375
  2. Thoroughly mix flour, soda, salt and spices.
  3. Melt shortening in large saucepan.
  4. Add sugar, molasses and eggs.  Mix well.  Cool slightly, and then add 4 cups dry ingredients and mix well.
  5. Turn mixture onto lightly floured surface.  Knead in remaining dry ingredients by hand.
  6. Roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness.  Cut out pieces with cutters.
  7. Place on greased cookie sheets.
  8. Bake 8 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the cookies.
  9. Let cool on pan for a few minutes before removing to rack to cool thoroughly.
